The Truth About Lies

Everyone has lied at one point or another in their lives. Whether it's about your weight, at the workplace, or your age (I'm guilty of all three), you've done it. We know it's wrong, but we do it. So, I have to ask, why?

I think there's many reasons why we all lie. First off, let's be honest (yes in a post about lying), it's fun! Even if, for the most part, you feel guilty (which you should), there is a small part of you that is like "Yeah, I'm a bad ass because I pulled that off". Which is a wonderful feeling until you get caught a few times, then you're a bad ass with no friends.

Second, it's because we don't care about the people we lie to. You don't care so much about their feelings - so who cares if you get caught?

This is the portion where I must introduce the different types of lies. There are white lies you tell. These are minor, insignificant, and/or exaggerations. Either way, if the truth was found out, it probably wouldn't be detrimental to the person, rather, irritating. Then there are lies about situations - what you did a certain night; maybe you went out with your boyfriend rather than your friends and you lied, or vice versa. These are a step above white lies because they tend to be a bit more hurtful. Then, there are lies about feelings. These are lies that are fair game to hurt everyone and anyone involved. These are the ones that ruin relationships. Society generally frowns upon these kinds of liars. However, I digress.*

Third, it's because we DO care about the people we lie to. Think about it, who are the people we most frequently lie to? Yes, this is America, and that question is applicable. Your friends, your significant other, and of course, your parents. These are the most important people in our lives, and we lie to them. How ironic. So what do we do with that?

Society hates liars, but we're all frauds. Where do we start to fix this problem? The obvious answer is honesty, but we all know it's more complex than that. For this one, I really don't have the answer or anything thought provoking. If anyone has any insight, feedback is welcomed and encouraged.

*Lies are not limited to those described
